historic stamford

the cottage is situated in the center of the picturesque village of uffington, on the outskirts of the historic georgian town of stamford.

famed for its classic architecture, stamford has over 600 listed buildings built mostly of stone and topped with local collyweston slate. amongst these are the Old Stamford Hotel with its impressive facade of columns (now converted into an arcade of boutiques), Browne's Hospital in the Broad Street and each of the five churches within the town center.

the town grew to prominence as a resting point for coach travellers, being situated midway between london and york on the great north road. the most impressive attraction is undoubtedly Burghley House, the elizabethan mansion built for william cecil.

but stamford doesn't only trade on its past, as many people visit the town today for its collection of independent shops, pubs and restaurants as they do for its history. a bustling market is held every friday within broadstreet, a smaller version each saturday in the town square and every other saturday there is a farmer's market.

stamford arts center, built in 1766, is one of the oldest provincial theatres in england. this is now a thriving focal point for arts events and also houses a cinema and the tourist Information center.

the river welland runs through the center of the town and is flanked by an area of parkland known simply as the meadows. this makes an ideal spot for relaxing during the summer months.
